Presbyterian worship is liturgical, meaning it follows a thoughtful and prayerful pattern shaped by Scripture and the life of the church. Liturgy comes from a Greek word that means “the work of the people.” Worship is not something done for us or by a few leaders—it is something we do together. God calls us into worship, and everyone present participates through prayer, singing, listening, speaking, and responding.
Presbyterian worship is shaped by the belief that God gathers us, speaks to us, and sends us out to live faithfully in the world. Worship is centered on Scripture, prayer, music, and the celebration of God’s grace, and it welcomes people of all backgrounds and life experiences.
Gathering
Worship begins as God gathers us. We come as we are—bringing our joys, questions, and struggles. Through music, prayer, and words of welcome, we are reminded that we belong to God and to one another.
Confession and Forgiveness
Together, we name the ways we fall short and the harm we cause to others and ourselves. In confession, we speak honestly before God. We then hear the good news that God’s grace is greater than our failures, and we are forgiven and set free to begin again.
The Word
We actively listen to Scripture readings and reflect on them through preaching, prayer, and sometimes silence. God’s Word connects ancient stories to our lives today, offering guidance, challenge, comfort, and hope.
Response
Worship invites a response from all of us. Through prayers, songs, affirmations of faith, and generous giving, we respond to what God is doing in our lives and in the world.
The Sacraments
At times, we celebrate Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. In Baptism, we are welcomed into God’s family. At the Table, all are invited to share in Christ’s love, remembering Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
Sending
Worship ends as God sends us out. We are blessed and commissioned to live what we have shared—loving our neighbors, seeking justice, and serving God in daily life.
